Charlotte’s Flowers

I   am   Charlotte   Karsemeijer   of   Charlotte’s   flowers,   based   on   a   beautiful   Scottish   island   in   the   Firth   of   Clyde. We   are in our second full season of growing fresh and seasonal cut flowers on our flower farm. We   are   passionate   about   growing   cottage   garden   style,   scented   flowers   with   a   low   carbon   footprint.   Most   of   our flowers    are    grown    from    seed    and    planted    out    in    our    open    beds    on    our    nursery    site    where    we    have    the opportunity to grow an exciting array of flowers as we benefit from Arran’s unique climate.    I grew up in the Netherlands where I studied horticulture    for 5 years. My passion for plants started in my mother’s    garden where I spent hours as a child helping her. Later    she opened her garden to the public. She has a cut flower    garden where people pick their own flowers.

Move to the UK

I   moved   to   Britain   13   years   ago,   when   I   was   fortunate   enough   to   have   the   opportunity   to   work   at   Wallington   Hall Northumberland   and   later   Mount   Stewart   in   County   Down.   I   fell   in   love with Arran when   I   came   to work   at   Brodick Castle and in 2009 became a self-employed gardener. For   the   last   8   years   my   partner   Jamie   Stewart   and   I   have   been   working   on   a   derelict   2   acre   family   plot.   When   we first started you couldn’t see the plot as it was completely overgrown and inaccessible. With   help   from   our   family   and   a   small   team   that work   for   us we   now   have   a   lovely   cut   flower   farm with   open   beds, polytunnel and greenhouse.

A beautiful place to work and grow fresh, seasonal flowers for people to enjoy at home!

We have a log cabin with a magnificent view over Whiting Bay where we condition and arrange the flowers.
Last year was very   exciting   as   it was   our   first year   of   trading.   I   had   help   from   the wonderfully   positive   and   talented Carol   McQuarrie   and   we   had   a   great   year   selling   bouquets,   jam   jar   posies   and   providing   local   businesses   with weekly flowers. We have also provided cut flowers for weddings and special events.
